The Cornish port town of Penzance lies approximately 75 miles west of Plymouth and, as such, is the most westerly of all Cornwall’s towns. In August 1855 the town held its first races on a course laid out on Eastern Green Sands stretching up to Long Rock. The racing was of an inferior quality and results not memorable, but the next year the meeting was staged on Friday 22nd August 1856 and opened with the Borough Stakes over 1 ½ miles which was won by Mr H S Gaye’s Paddy. A Hunters’ Stakes which followed went to Edgar. After racing a Race Dinner was served at the Western Hotel. There are no further reports of future meetings in the town. |
